In our poetry unit this year, our sixth graders read and memorized famous poems, were exposed to many different types of poetry, and tried their hand at writing their own poetry. Some of those poems include tanka, cinquain, haiku, acrostic, bio, concrete, diamante, ocean research, couplets, title down, and limericks. My students had fun creating poems that expressed who they really are. They also quickly discovered that writing poetry is very revealing, which can be scary. I am proud of their willingness to share this part of themselves with others. The openness and ease with which they write, along with their wit and honesty, simply amazes me. I hope you enjoy reading their work as much as I have. They should be very proud of their accomplishments. ~~~~~~~Ann Gookin, 6th Grade Language Arts Teacher
